Wafer Bliss

One of my fondest memories as a kid was getting to go to the 7-11 store to purchase candy. Lots of candy. I would buy and enjoy numerous different types including 1/2 penny bubble gum. Remember that? Many of you probably not.

Necco wafers, though, were one of my favorites. Always wrapped in a wax paper, opaque wrapper, so you could see through it all of the colors. A hard wafer, each one a delicious crunch. There are pink, green, grey, white, and brown and a couple others.

Now, it seems that the candy that has been around for decades unchanged, is well – going to be changed. All natural dyes and flavors, instead of the artificial ones. Oh, they could not duplicate the green color, so it is no more. To me, if it isn’t broken, don’t ‘fix’ it. Nothing is sacred it seems. I will give it a try and let you know. But, somehow it feels like another memory of childhood is no more. Have you seen a Whitman’s Sampler lately? Sigh.
