Space Trek

The last 45 years has been an amazing trip, literally, where space travel is concerned. As soon as 2012, space tourism may become a reality. Being one of the generation that grew up watching Captain Kirk and crew zipping around the universe each week using all types of far out gadgets. It is only natural that real life gadgets would spawn from science fiction.

With the NASA space program of the 1960’s and early 1970’s, a revolution of products showed up to the average consumer to make life, supposedly, easier. Kirk had his communicator, we get a cell phone, etc. I remember having to look for glass bottles in the road to avoid getting a flat on my bike as a kid, and later my car. Plastic bottles that came about from the space program did away with that problem! Unfortunately, it also did away with the deposit you used to get on bottles, too! I would collect them and turn them in to the store for candy money. But that is another story.

Thus, it is only natural that commercial space travel would become a reality. There are several companies currently working to bring space travel to the masses right at this moment. One that will probably the first to bring this to reality is Richard Branson and his Virgin Galactic company. Of course, the price in the near future promises to prohibitive to the average consumer. Tha average cost will be somewhere in the $100,000 per hour range. Out of my budget for sure!

I can just see some of the rogue nations in their paranoia threatening to shoot them down for flying over their country. Those darn capitalists!
